Hunt’s Point Market - Food Processing and Distribution Center
The Hunts Point Cooperative Market is a wholesale food market located on 60 acres (24 ha) in the Hunts Point neighborhood of in the New York City borough of the Bronx. It is the one of the largest food distribution centers of its kind in the world, and currently is the source for approximately 50 percent of the New York region’s meat; and 50 independent wholesale food businesses located at the Market supply food to over 22 million people in the New York metropolitan area.
The original facility was built in 1962 under the administration of Mayor Robert Wagner. It was a 40-acre facility with six buildings, and since then has expanded to consist of seven large refrigerated/freezer buildings on 60 acres.
According to the press release announcing the project, Mr. Rudolph was to be responsible for the project design, for designing many of the market buildings in the project and setting all design and structural specifications of the project.
