New Art Building for the Manoa Campus of the University of Hawaii

  • The proposed project site is located between Bachman and Hemingway Halls at the Manoa campus of the University of Hawaii.

  • Rudolph prepares plans for a building that is to cost $2.8 million and be completed in 1970.

  • The site of the proposed Art Building is relocated to the corner of East-West Road and Dole Street, requiring the demolition of existing Gilmore Hall.

  • Drawings are changed again when the second site is designated part of the 21 acres for the federal government’s proposed East-West Center (Burns Hall is later constructed on the site).

  • The Art Building is completed in Fall 1975 at a cost of $6.4 million. The building is designed by Group 70 Lab, Francis Oda architect in collaboration with the art faculty, especially its chairman Prithwish Neogy.

The University of Hawaii’s Fine Arts Building disposes platforms and enclosures at various levels on a self-bracing series of bents. Controlled light from the north, cross ventilation in all rooms, and the need for high and low ceilings determine the plan. The building is intended to grow and incorporates existing structures into its ambience.
